Quest for Identity and Self Discovery in Anita Nair’s “Ladies Coupe”

Abstract

Anita Nair is one of the finest Indian writers with an international reputation. Anita Nairs Ladies Coupe is an attempt to study the identity, self discovery and a voice against female oppression and the problems of women. The present article deals with the womans capacity to assert her own rights and individuality in marriage and develop into a full-fledged woman of prospective as a human being.In her Ladies Coupe Anita Nair presents stories of several female protagonists, who struggle to achieve their self-hood. Identity is a state of mind that is granted by the interaction with the fellow beings in the society and also, by the acceptance in the society. A womans identity crisis is that where she struggles to achieve as a human being in its full sense against those forces of society who bind her in chains and reject her as a being in comparison to man. Earlier, woman sought her identity in the relationship as a wife, mother and daughter.But now, woman wants to stand on her feet as a full human being, equal to man in society. This Paper represents how Nair tries to spread social identity and self discovery among the people through her novel Ladies Coupe.
