DISPELLING STEREOTYPES: THE OVERPOWERING ROLE OF MOVIES IN CONSTRUCTING SOCIAL IDENTITIES OF INDIVIDUALS WITH LANGUAGE DISORDERS

Abstract

The paper analyses various language disorders, thus providing a review of the observance of the social and emotional functioning of the individuals with specific language disorders.  Receptive and Expressive Language Disorders are mentioned here with due care. It also focuses in particular discussing the overpowering role of movies in constructing social identities of those people with communication disorders. Four Hollywood movies are selected on this premise. They are The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007) directed byJulian Schnabel; Aphasia (2010) byJim Gloster; Like Stars on Earth (2007) by Amir Khan; and The Possibilities are Endless (2014) by Edward Lovelace and James Hall. Since films are the powerful medium for entertainment and education, it can immerse youin others life for a few hours and help to empathise with them whom you have never met. It can do a lot to eradicate or change the perception of people about the social issues and evils. These above mentioned movies are not merely portraying the stereotyping life of those affected people, but in contrary they highlight the theme of triumphing over fate. The article concludes by calling attention to famous people in history and of the present timethat overpowered such challenges in their life and became successful personalities
