  • K Rajini et al.

Abstract

Anita Nair is one of the best and most influential authors of contemporary India. Her major novels Ladies Coupe, Mistress, The Better Man, Lessons in Forgetting and the latest Eating Wasps deal with women, their personal lives, relationships and social stratification. Just because she has highlighted women and their issues in most of her bestselling novels she cannot be labelled as a writer with a feminist lineage. This paper tries to show that she has given importance to men as well in her writings and has focussed on their shortcomings, imperfections, desires etc. The Better Man deals with existentialism and strive for identity of a retired government employee, so do the characters in the novel Mistress. Often one can come across the complexities and complex relationships between man and woman in her writings and thus cannot be exclusively tagged as a feminist writer.
