Abstract

Communication is the transference of feelings, ideas, dilemmas and the likes. The lack of it would result in complicated and meaningless relationships that exists just for the sake of existing. It would result in marriages that lead to infidelities. JhumpaLahiri in her short story collection Interpreter of Maladies focuses on how communication plays an integral role in every marriage. She teaches you lessons about marriages that fail and crumble before you, just because the partners chose silence above talking. As it is said it takes two to tango, so in Lahiris stories at times it is the men who are to be blamed for this and at times the women. But what is worth mentioning is that the women characters of Lahiri irrespective of their shortcomings have a certain charm. A quality of their own that makes them stand apart from their male counterparts. The present study focuses on the women in Lahiris Interpreter of Maladies who are an amalgam of virtue and vices.
