A JOURNEY INTO THE PSYCHE OF ATTICUS FINCH IN HARPER LEE’S TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD AND GO SET A WATCHMAN

Abstract

Racism  is  ingrained  deep  into  the  psyche  of  American  civilization  that  even  after  legally  banning  it  from  the  American  soil, its  residue  still  permeates  different  facets  of  social  and  political  life  even  today. Even  though  the  abolition  of  slavery  helped  the  Blacks  to  be  elevated  to  the  ranks  of  citizens  there  are  still  sections  of  Americans  who  hold  racial  thoughts  against  them. Both  blacks  and  whites  played  crucial  roles  in  this  fight  for  equality. But  the  larger question  that  needs  to  be  pondered  is, what  propelled  this  fight  for  the  whites ? Whether  they  were  doing  it  out  of  their  superior  white  obligation  or  by  considering  blacks  as  equal  counterparts. This  paper  focuses  on  this  question  by  trying  to  get  into  the  consciousness  of  Atticus  Finch  in  Harper  Lees  To  Kill  A  Mockingbird  and  Go  Set  A  Watchman  within  the  context  of  racism  and  Gayatri  Chakravorty  Spivaks  Can  The  Subaltern  Speak?
