Carson McCullers was born Lula Carson Smith in the deep South - Columbus, Georgia - in 1917. This paper demonstrates how Carson McCullers The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (1940) engages Gothic and Russian Realists influences on characters and settings. Carson McCullers, used her first novel in part to meditate on the Southern Gothic mode itself while further employing the mode to reconstruct social meaning
