Abstract

Munsi Premchand is a prolific writer in Hindi and Urdu Literature. His inclination towards the theme of social realism in his works, gives him the sobriquet Soldier of the Pen. (Rai xxi) The Shroud is one of his last and most famous short stories. It voices subaltern resistance and manipulation of the hegemonic system for survival. But the complex theme is dealt with a humourous undertone throughout the story.
