Abstract

Recently, socially responsible activities are on rise in the corporate sector in India. The present study is aimed at examining Indias banking industry for the corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities being carried out by the major players, and conducting impact analysis of such activities in terms of image building and performance improvement of such players. It is based on the published CSR data of major Indian banks in the recent years. The results indicate that - a) the quantum of CSR activities in Indian Banks is increasing, b) there is a positive association between business performance and CSR activities by banks and c) CSR practices have led to improvement in the goodwill and image-building of the banks. This suggests that the efforts contributed towards society bring back advantages for the corporate sector in terms of value enhancement.  This could also be an interesting archetype for other service sectors.
