Abstract

In 1991, Wayne Thomas at TWI (The Welding Institute) in UK found a new welding process known as friction stir welding. It is a solid state welding process in which two work pieces are joined together without melting by using a non-consumable electrode. A Review is made on mechanical properties and the various microscopic analyses which are done on the materials like UNS S31803 duplex stainless steel, SA 213 tube to SA387, Al7075alloy and AA6061 alloy in which friction stir welding was carried out. Here the microscopic analysis was mostly carried out on welded areas and the various results obtained are also reviewed
