Abstract

Lantana camara leaves are deliberated as worthy traditional medicine. The aim of this study was to screen the phytochemicals, to evaluate the total flavonoid contents as well as antioxidant activity of various extract of Lantana camara. Preliminary phytochemical analysis generally helps identify and classify the plant extracts bioactive constituents. Chemical test for alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, saponins, phenolics, proteins and amino acids, diterpenes and tannins separately for extracts of all samples. The Lantana camara leaves, extract and aqueous extract showed presence of phenols. The ethanol and Aqueous extracts possess almost all the phytochemicals that were tested when compared other Pet ether.  The total phenolic content of Lantana camara leaves pet ether, ethanol and aqueous extract showed the content value 2.06mg/100mg, 2.45mg/100mg and 2.29mg/100mg extract quercetin equivalent. The total phenoilic content of Lantana camara leaves showed the content value 4.69mg/100mg and 4.11mg/100mg extract gallic acid equivalent in ethanol and aqueous extract.  The DPPH scavenging activity of ethanolic extract of Lantana camara were IC50 value 68.78  as compared to positive control ascorbic acid 17.681g/ml. The outcome of H2O2 scavenging activity of ethanolic extract of Lantana camara extract was found lower than ascorbic acid, reference standard ascorbic acid showed IC50 36.613g/ml.  It was observed that the phenolic contents correlates well with its DPPH, FRAP and H2O2 assays, the confirming that flavonoid and phenolic compounds are likely to contribute to radical scavenging activity of this plant extract. Our current results emerged that Lantana camara act as an antioxidant agent due to its free radical scavenging. So, the plant may be further pursued to find out for its pharmacological active natural products.
